Hi Dusty,
I greatly enjoyed your website and share some similar experiences with you that seem to fuel both my personal and professional endeavors! After experiencing a childhood of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, I had a very difficult time transitioning into adulthood and an even more difficult time coming to terms with my own identity as a survivor. No matter how far I progressed in my recovery, I still felt like a "freak of nature" and although I am a psych major, psychology was never able to address why I felt so isolated from others beyond 'because of the abuse'. I needed to know why.

Then one day I took a neuropsychology class and I received some of the answers I was looking for. The more I learned about the brain and its structures and chemistry, the more okay I seemed to feel. After I graduated I worked as an adolescent counselor in a residential facility. The treatment these children received was horrendous under the guise of "treatment"...it was simply retraumatizing them, which hinders recovery and wellness. So I taught the kids about how neurobiology interacts with psychology and social experiences and I witnessed some amazing transformations begin to take place. I decided to become and MSW so I could learn how to incorporate this knowledge into systems of care.

Now, as a researcher and independent consultant, I am attempting, and somewhat succeeding, in utilizing neurobiology to change systems of care around trauma. I have trained a wide variety of social service administrators and staff on the relevance and necessity of this information and all participants have expressed great thirst for more neuroscience knowledge in the area of trauma and best practices.

I thought I would share some of my story with you, as well as my website, in case you might be interested in learning more if you didn't already have this knowledge on neuroscience. I'm not necessarily promoting myself so much as trying to disseminate this information to any and all parties I feel might be able to use this information for good:)

My website is called Positive Human Development and I'd be more than happy to refer some good resources if you are interested in learning more!

Take care,
Ally
