Dare to Transform

Revolutionizing Mental Health and Human Services

I have started a new ning network, Media Arts in Therapy:
mediaartstherapy.ning.com

My intention with this network is to provide a forum for dialog between therapists who are utilizing media arts (visualization, photography, video, sound, and/or downloads from cell phones) in their practice, along with media artists, software programmers, writers and researchers.

Creative Arts Therapies have been proven effective in the treatment of grief, loss and trauma because often, emotional experiences are linked with one of the senses as the trauma event is stored as memory. Sometimes talking alone does not access those memories as directly as art forms that stimulate the senses: imagery, sound, imagination, music, dance, movement, and performance. Video is a unique art form in that it stimulates audio and visual regions of the brain at the same time, particularly during editing.

Video Art Therapy utilizes video technologies of editing, and media capture of images, music, and photographs. Video software is designed for narrative construction through visual and audio channels. It allows for arranging and rearranging elements much like the way memories are stored in the brain.

I am interested in a dialog and possible partnership with individuals interested in researching the use of media arts as a therapeutic device in unraveling the effects of imagery and sound linked in trauma memory.

Sincerely,
Basia Mosinski, ATR, MA, MFA

Thanks, I think I tried changing to art singular, but to no avail, but rushing out, so didn't try many combinations, and punted. ;-}

Hi Jerry,
I saw that you got into: mediaartstherapy.ning.com
I am hoping to bring the thoughts, experiences, and inspirations of people from different disciplines together with a goal of understanding the effects of trauma and finding ways to treat it that help empower the person affected to regain power and control of their lives.

Thanks for checking it out.

Yes, thank you for allowing this unlicensed/uncertified techie rif raf in ;-}

If we went into many parts of Virginia, many inpatient, schools, the inner city communities, and many in the general public, we may find more trauma survivors than expected. So, as previously mentioned, YouTubing something mild (with appropriate references/ links to services and self study) may help widen the support network and inforn the public that would otherwise suffer without the awareness of the works available...

Trauma doesn't discriminate, so why should information about trauma?

Jerry, I agree that trauma does not discriminate. Thank you for putting it so succinctly.

You mention YouTubing something mild...I am not sure that I understand the scope of your suggestion.

That might be a little involved to scope out off the cuff.

Very roughly, the idea is an introduction to the trauma
experience (types of abuse - physical, emotional, sexual, terrorism, refuge, etc, avoiding, ), some therapies like media arts in coping/
healing/ recovery from the trauma, and resources and advocacy.

All more like Public Service Announcement (PSA) but far more creative, experiential, preferably interactive online option and informative..

The web and YouTube could reach a larger audience/ and diverse population than broadcast, allow for more display time (> 30-60 secs), some interactivity (show some tools for media creation, best uses of traditional arts, journaling, poetry, crafts, AddYourCreativeCopingRecoveryTherapyIdeasHere)...

Even packaging the D2T conference materials onto a CD/DVD for those who have dialin, may be a small scale contribution to outreach and awareness...
