I have started a new ning network, Media Arts in Therapy:
mediaartstherapy.ning.com
My intention with this network is to provide a forum for dialog between therapists who are utilizing media arts (visualization, photography, video, sound, and/or downloads from cell phones) in their practice, along with media artists, software programmers, writers and researchers.
Creative Arts Therapies have been proven effective in the treatment of grief, loss and trauma because often, emotional experiences are linked with one of the senses as the trauma event is stored as memory. Sometimes talking alone does not access those memories as directly as art forms that stimulate the senses: imagery, sound, imagination, music, dance, movement, and performance. Video is a unique art form in that it stimulates audio and visual regions of the brain at the same time, particularly during editing.
Video Art Therapy utilizes video technologies of editing, and media capture of images, music, and photographs. Video software is designed for narrative construction through visual and audio channels. It allows for arranging and rearranging elements much like the way memories are stored in the brain.
I am interested in a dialog and possible partnership with individuals interested in researching the use of media arts as a therapeutic device in unraveling the effects of imagery and sound linked in trauma memory.
Sincerely,
Basia Mosinski, ATR, MA, MFA
