Emerging from Silence -- TIC and Impact of Self-Injury

Attended a first workshop on Self Injury.

Presentation by panel including personal stories and experiences with self injury.

Ruta (Cutting Edge and other works)
Anita (Pittsburg and academia)
Mary (SAMHSA including personal story)
and Margaret (aka Yoda?)

Handouts were Sidran Institute and Cutting Edge

I found the short talks very informative on self injury, including how individuals and institutions deal with cutting, burning, and other alternative? forms like athletics as self injury and much more....

blogging this during am plenary, so back to listening and hope to return to elaborate on some things I wasn't able to comment on as it got later and getting ready to go home, try to rest and return for the early next full day...

Some interpretations:

Presented dual provider / survivor roles and effective use in tranforming organizations views and actual client/patient clinical interactions/ interventions...

I'm wondering about broadening the working definition of self injury to include addictions / process and otherwise substance abuse as a self injury.

some favorite quotes:
'would you do the self injury piece?' humorous response because it's not part but the whole

self injury as a coping mechanism which is risky to summarily remove
without dealing with underlying hurt/ issues...

Overall experience with workshop:
Very entertaining and informative high level overview of self injury and it's impacts, and associated culture change required to deal with it individually and organizationally...

Would like to ask for the powerpoint slides which were not used but likely provide essential background for this newbie...

Need to review notes, process and post here to learn effectively.

Was later asked if they discussed certain types of self injury (hair pulling for example), and now wondering if we should create forums/ subgroups based on the types, kind of like 'birds of a knive', (overeaters = food), sport (i.e. why am i up at 4 am to run?), finding the underlying pain, moving it to healing, etc...
Injuries are caused by different mechanisms harmful or damaging, altering the balance or homeostasis of cells. Among the causes of injuries are:

External causes

* Natural Causes: As trauma, radiation, electricity, heat produced by burning, cold.
* Causes chemical substances as corrosive to the skin, such as toxins or poisons.
* Biological Causes: These are infectious agents, whether virus, bacteria or parasite

Immunosuppression is the use of drugs (called immunosuppressants) in immunosuppressive therapy to inhibit the activity of the immune system. Clinically it is used for:

* Prevent the rejection of a transplanted organ

* Treatment of autoimmune disease or diseases that may be of autoimmune origin, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, or systemic lupus erythematosus

These drugs are not free of side effects and risks. Because most of them do not act selectively, the immune system loses the ability to resist infections and the spread of cancer cells. There are side effects such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, damage to liver or kidney, and so on. On the other hand, interact with other immunosuppressive drugs and may affect their behavior.
